Planning & Development

The Planning & Development Department provides guidance and oversight for construction, land use, and development within the City of Stamford. This includes permitting, zoning regulations, and support for residential and commercial projects.

Permitting Information

Permits are required for many types of construction and property improvements to ensure work meets city codes and safety standards.

Permits may be required for:

  • All new construction

  • Building additions or remodels

  • Electrical and plumbing

  • Signage and exterior changes

To determine if a permit is required or to begin the process, please contact the City.

Zoning Information

Zoning regulations determine how property can be used within the city and help guide development.

Planning & Development can assist with:

  • Zoning classifications

  • Property use requirements

  • Setbacks and development standards

  • Questions related to city ordinances

If you are planning a project, it’s recommended to confirm zoning requirements before beginning work.

Zoning requests may be submitted using our Contact Form.

Please note: Requests are reviewed in the order they are received and it may take up to 5-7 business days for zoning verification.

Forms & Documents

Applications, permits, and other related documents are available through the City.
